[Shinji doesn't react much. He doesn't flinch, this time, he doesn't try to pull away. When she wraps her arms around him, a small shake, barely noticeable, runs through him.
It's when she pulls away that Shinji realizes there's a tight feeling growing in his chest, making it hard to breathe. He squares his shoulders, ducking his head further, words tumbling over themselves.]
... Is it something you want to hear? [He appreciates it. But he doesn't want to push anything on to the poor guy if he's just offering because he's nice.]
[He can hear her just fine, even if her voice is muffled. Though he has his earbuds in, no music is playing. There's nothing he wants to listen to. Nothing he listens to works, anyway. He hesitates.]
[It isn't, of course. A person kinder than him would agree right away. Shinji, who's always been afraid of intimacy, isn't certain about opening up so much.
--but that's the lesson Kaworu's been trying to teach him. Hasn't it? He meets Shintaro's eyes.]
... I wouldn't ask to see you like this if I didn't.
[She hesitates for a moment, and then feels foolish for the pause; even if she isn't sure whether or not it's true, it's probably what he needs to hear.]
[He falls into step next to him, eyes on the floor ahead of them. He's memorized the path to the observatory so he doesn't need to watch, so much. There's nobody around at this time, anyway.]
... I met Ayano in middle school, because our seats were next to each other. I honestly didn't think much of her, but she always talked to me and folded paper cranes out of the test papers we got back.
[Hopefully the cat doesn't attack him upon arrival! Maybe he even bought something for the cat. Maybe he has a bell or something. But he will knock on Shinji's door in just a few minutes!]
[It's perfectly safe! Especially since Shinji's cat is as timid as he is. Shinji will be opening the door with a smile, the cat darting beneath one of the beds when the door opens.]
Hey. Did you go somewhere? [That's why he's making a delivery, right?]
Yeah. To America. The Mekakushi-dan wanted to do a supply run but it ended up being kind of a vacation so I thought I might bring some stuff back. Do you eat popcorn?
[He's not sure if he's ever mentioned the dan's name to Shinji but oh well. He has a bag full of random stuff like that popcorn and a mug and also a tourist's hoodie and some other trinkets. Definitely photo postcards as always. And also a box of hot chocolate mixes.]
