Kinda. Here. [He's got a bag from which he produces... another bag! It's one of those plastic bags you get at souvenir stores with SAGAprinted on the front and some strange mascot character with it. From it, he pulls out a bunch of small sturdy-looking sheets of paper. They're postcards!]
I dropped by some souvenir shops when I went to Japan with Kano a couple weeks back. These.. [he points to some, like the street scene and the red torii with snow] aren't the place we went to, but this is winter.
He's never seen it outside of textbooks and, even then, they were only depicted in places like mountains. The grainy photographs with their streaks of white did little to tell of the bright colors that could go along with the whiteness as well. Shinji examines the postcards closely, taking in as much detail as he could from the pictures.
So... this was what Japan used to look like during 'winter?']
There was definitely some on the ground. I think it snowed once or twice for a little while we were there too, enough to pile up and be powdery instead of just slush and ice.
[Knowing Shin and Kano they probably got caught up in a snowball fight when Kano wasn't just dragging him around.]
You can keep those, if you want. I thought you might like them.
[It's hard to imagine the concept of snow and ice when he's never experienced it. Its texture and the sound footsteps would make in it... he wishes he came along to feel it. What would it be like to roll snow in his hands?
[He grins back at the smile. He's honestly glad to see it.]
If we get an opportunity to go somewhere snowy -- you know, somewhere that's not as horrid as Alaska -- you can go take a look. Since you've got the chance, you might as well try to experience whatever you can. Although you'll probably have a hard time moving; it'll probably be really cold for you.
I won't mind. We survived a blizzard, after all. I think I'll be fine.
[It's not a mission!! It'd be fun. He hasn't gone on those sorts of trips enough, even back when he was juggling his role as a pilot and student. Being always ready for action had its downsides.]
Yup. Some trees lose leaves in the fall, while some change colors like these ones -- they're maples; momiji -- and others keep their green leaves all year round.
You could tell me about what you'd do during the seasons. [He has an idea. People went sledding and skiing during the winter. Snowball fights were something that were popular. He wasn't sure about the other seasons, but he'd be happy to learn about those, too.]
Uh... well, it doesn't always snow as much where I'm from, since it's the city and it's warmer, but when it does, Momo and I used to make snowmen when we were kids. It gets cold, so a lot of houses would have kotatsu, too -- do you know those?
They're tables for the winter. You know normal chabudai right? Those tables where you sit on the floor -- kotatsu have this electric heater attached to the bottom, and you can put a tablecloth like futon on it so you get this heated table with a blanket to sit at.
